
Engineering Principal Associate I
Position Summary
Principal Associates at TEI are key team members who are expected to demonstrate leadership in projects, for clients, and within TEI in the following ways:
- Project Leadership entails managing, directing, and executing overall project work underneath a Principal-in-Charge and developing project scopes, fees, and schedules. This position requires developing comprehensive project management skills to maintain deadlines and project deliverables.
- Client Leadership involves working directly with clients for projects, developing relationships with clients, and maintaining them beyond the life of a project.

Examples of Projects & Responsibilities
As a Principal Associate in TEI’s engineering team, the following are examples of the types of projects, deliverables, and responsibilities you may expect, depending on the project and your particular skills:
- Preparing intersection and corridor traffic analyses
- Microsimulation of isolated intersections, corridors, and area networks
- Development of roadway cross-sections, schematic design, and PS&E production
- Reviewing site development plans and preparing Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) reports
- Optimizing traffic signal timing plans, including use of priority and pre-emption
- Identifying and analyzing safety improvements, including use of the Highway Safety Manual
- Detailed design of traffic signals, on-street and off-street bikeways, sidewalk and pedestrian facilities, transit stops, and intersections focused on system safety
- Identify and follow project management standards and best practices
- Collaborate as a part of a team to appropriately staff projects and manage client work
Qualifications:
TEI requires a comprehensive and practical knowledge of transportation design elements including use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the project. A successful candidate will have previous work in some or many of the following areas:
- Traffic signal timing plans and phasing optimization
- Trip Generation for mixed-use facilities
- Microsimulation of transportation facilities
- Intersection design (e.g. signalized intersections, innovative intersections, roundabouts)
- Applying best practices from industry standards and guides such as:
- Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Highway Capacity Manual
- AASHTO Green Book
- NACTO Design Guides
Candidates should meet most of the following qualifications: :
- Professional Engineer in Texas (or the ability to obtain Texas reciprocity within six months)
- 6+ years of experience, with at least 1 year of project management experience
- Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks
- Demonstrated analytic and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated skills in MicroStation and/or other CAD software
- Demonstrated skills in traffic modeling software (e.g. Synchro and/or VISTRO)
- Experience with VISSIM is a plus
