Position Summary

Principal Associates at TEI are key team members who are expected to demonstrate leadership in projects, for clients, and within TEI in the following ways:

  • Project Leadership entails managing, directing and executing overall project work underneath a Principal-in-Charge and developing project scopes, fees, and schedules. This position requires developing comprehensive project management skills to maintain deadlines and project deliverables.
  • Client Leadership involves working directly with clients for projects, developing relationships with clients, and maintaining them beyond the life of a project.
  • Team Leadership at TEI recognizes there is great value in continual learning, from experts in our fields and from each other. As a Principal Associate you are encouraged to build your knowledge and skillset while helping grow the team members around you through mentorship and training
Examples of Projects & Responsibilities

As a Principal Associate in TEI’s planning team, the following are examples of the types of projects, deliverables, and responsibilities you may expect, depending on the project and your particular skills:

  • Lead development of planning projects – may include:
    • Multimodal, bike, or transit plans
    • Sub-area, city, or regional plans
    • Transportation planning components of broader projects like Livable Centers Studies or Comprehensive Plans
  • Create and lead meaningful public participation activities
  • Facilitate stakeholder coordination within projects
  • Develop deliverables that support consensus and are implementable for clients
  • Identify and follow project management standards and best practices
  • Collaborate as a part of a team to appropriately staff projects and manage client work
Qualifications:

TEI requires a comprehensive and practical knowledge of transportation planning field with use of analytical judgment, communication, and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment. A successful candidate will have previous work or educational experience in some or many of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of the practices, principles, and processes of multimodal and/or long-range transportation planning
  • Complete street and context-sensitive streets planning
  • Bicycle/pedestrian facility planning
  • Multimodal corridor studies
  • Transit planning
  • City or regional transportation planning
  • Transit orient development and economic development strategies
  • Grant writing and implementation strategies
  • Candidates should meet most of the following qualifications: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban/transportation planning, or a related field
  • 6+ years of experience, with at least 1 year of project management experience
  • AICP certification, or the ability to obtain within one year
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills
  • Organization skills and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated analytic and problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated skills in GIS; experience with spatial analysis, network analyst, and ArcGIS Online apps are a plus
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and other related products
