The Lexington at Oxbow Drive intersection was upgraded to a roundabout in Sugar Land, Texas. TEI participated in both the initial schematic design of the roundabout by Aguirre & Fields LP, as well as peer review of the final design for the City of Sugar Land. This was the first roundabout on a major thoroughfare in the City of Sugar Land.
TEI provided capacity analysis, and traffic modeling using both Synchro and VISSIM. Fire truck turning capabilities were modeled using AutoTURN software. TEI also provided support for the design and construction cost estimates for alternative design options at the intersection of Lexington Boulevard and Oxbow Drive. The team evaluated stop control, signalization, and a variety of roundabout configurations for the intersection. A single-lane roundabout was determined to be the optimal solution.
After a one-lane roundabout was selected as the appropriate intersection treatment, Aguirre & Fields LP proceeded with the design phase. TEI provided 50% and a 100% peer review for the City of Sugar Land for the geometrics, signing, and striping of the roundabout. These comments were incorporated into the final design of the roundabout.
TEI also assisted the City in preparing their roundabout design standards and standard construction details for roundabouts. These included design guidance for splitter island design, signing standards, and pavement marking standards for both single- and multi-lane roundabouts.
